A Swedish classic makes comeback in the kitchen
Kockum's enamelled kitchenware were commonly found in Swedish homes for over a hundred years. Most of those born in the 20th century have been served from these beautiful pots and pans. Almost half a century later, the brand Kockums Jernverk makes a comeback with an updated assortment of enamelled kitchen products that was first shown at the design and interior design fair Formex in August 2018.
-The goal is to become a leading global player just as Kockums Jernverk was before the plastic took over, says Rickard Andersson who leads the beautiful and sustainable products' retreat.
Rickard is from Anderstorp in western Småland, a Swedish society with just 5,000 inhabitants and a total of 700 companies. Entrepreneurial spirit and business lust are in the genes. After leaving as a partner in the family company Golvabia, Rickard looked for a new industry. Then mom's enamelled pot on the kitchen table caught his eye. A check on Tradera, a Swedish auction site, confirmed: there was a large and open market waiting to be renewed.
A newly acquired property of almost 6,000 square meters in Anderstorp accommodates both warehouse and office, which are supplemented with a sales office in Gothenburg where Rickard lives. Production takes place in a 60-year-old enamel factory in Europe with documented high quality.
-I would like to manufacture in Sweden, but the competence no longer exists, explains Rickard, who aims to quickly capture market shares from more renowned competitors. The new range will be sold at large retail chains within household items and furnishings, but also online at online stores with the right profile.
At the greatness of time, Kockums was one of the world's largest producers of kitchenware. The Kockum family ran the company for 4 generations, and during the glory days in the 1950s, the company had 2000 employees in Kallinge and Ronneby. In 1971 the plastic had conquered the public homes and the production of the famous enamelled and stainless-steel cookware stopped.
But now the brand has gained a new life. The new enamelled products introduced at the Formex fair are a refined assortment that has been carefully updated in collaboration with Louise Klarsten at Color House in Gothenburg.
-We have slightly adjusted the Nordic colour range, fine-tuned colours and adapted the impression without compromising on the historical heritage, Rickard explains. Today, interest in design, cooking and sustainability goes hand in hand and I am convinced that we are right in time - once again.
The carefully selected starter range contains among others pans, oven pans, mugs, plates and teapots; all in different sizes and colour combinations and of the highest quality.
